Boys basketball rankings (12/14)

Kentridge’s upset of Federal Way on Saturday night opened a hole at the top of the Class 4A rankings, and there was no tougher decision this week than who to slide up to No. 1. For now, the top spot remains in Federal Way, but it’s across town at Decatur. With Marcus Tibbs back for his fifth year, the Gators have started the season 4-0. Curtis visits Decatur on Tuesday; the two teams are the favorites in the SPSL South.

Watch out for Garfield, with or without Tony Wroten. The Bulldogs have great depth, and they will pressure teams from start to finish.

Expect a lot of fluctuation from week to week throughout the first couple weeks of the season; it takes a lot of time to get a feel for each team. For example, no one was talking about Mt. Tahoma before the season, but this past week, the T-Birds beat both Bellarmine Prep and Central Kitsap. This week, they are No. 3.

In Class 3A, Bellevue wasn’t punished for losing last night to a great team from Oregon. Shadle Park gets credit for ending Ferris’ 59-game winning streak, though it sounds like Ferris’ young players really gave the Highlanders a game. I got a look at Mt. Rainier yesterday, and that’s a team worth watching, if you get the chance. The Rams really like to run, and they have so many athletes to pull it off.
