Girls basketball rankings

Here’s a question for you: Is Kentwood the best girls basketball in the state, and third best in the nation?

The Conquerors looked awfully good at times last Thursday in their 65-48 romp over Auburn Riverside last Thursday. They also had some not-so-good moments, but it is early in the season. Best in the state? Possibly. But I gave Lewis and Clark of Spokane the nod in Class 4A to start the season and am sticking to that until someone knocks off the three-time defending champs. Third best in the nation, as ranked by USA Today? Not so sure about that, but it’s fun to see a local girls team get that kind of love.

Kentwood (5-0) does vault from No. 4 to No. 2 in this week’s Seattle Times 4A state rankings, leaping over Moses Lake (3-1), slips to No. 3 with Auburn Riverside at No. 4. Moses Lake lost to unbeaten Couer d’Alene, Idaho, last week.

Redmond, No. 9 last week, falls out of the rankings and I debated between Edmonds-Woodway and Inglemoor for the 10th and final spot. For now, it goes to E-W.

In 3A, Prairie shoots up to No. 2 behind Kennedy and Meadowdale takes the third spot. Shadle Park of Spokane, last week’s No. 2, drops to No. 5 after losing to University of Spokane. Sure, U-Hi is a 4A team, but not a power this year (2-2), so that loss costs the Highlanders a bit. Lakeside slides from third to fourth. That’s not so much a reflection of the Lions’ loss to Issaquah, now rated No. 9 in 4A, as it is a power surge by Prairie.

West Valley of Yakima, No. 6 last week, is out of the top-10 after losses to Moses Lake, Prosser and East Valley of Yakima. Don’t be surprised to see the Rams in the playoff picture down the road, though. Others moved up the ladder, leaving one spot open at No. 10, and that goes to Auburn Mountainview (with Liberty highly considered also). Mountainview nearly knocked off No. 6 White River on Saturday, falling by two.

Let’s hear what you’ve got to say about these:
