The latest news and analysis on high-school sports around the Seattle area

When is it safe to travel for competition?

If you’re a high-school basketball junkie, you no doubt are going through major withdrawals with another round of cancellations today. I was really looking forward to covering that 4A boys game tonight between No. 8 Kentridge and No. 9 Kentwood, and I was anxious to see how that 3A boys game between No. 7 Mount Rainier and No. 8 Renton turned out.

Most districts have strict no-school, no-sports policy, and it makes sense that if it’s not safe to drive to school for classes, it’s not safe to travel for athletic purposes either.

But here’s a question for you — what do you think about travel during the holiday break, which officially starts for most schools on Monday? There are a ton of tournaments and other nonleague games scheduled around the area, as well as some wrestling tourneys. And, as you know, more snow is in the forecast.

Who should make the call about whether travel is safe?
