Girls basketball rankings

OK, so the Pasco girls basketball team is really that good, better than No. 6 in the state in Class 4A.

After spanking Post Falls, Idaho, in a nonleague game last Tuesday, the Bulldogs went to Moses Lake — then ranked No. 3 — and took care of business, 63-56, handing the Chiefs their first in-state loss (they had lost in early December to Couer d’Alene). Pasco then drilled Richland by 21.

So, the Bulldogs take Moses Lake’s spot in this week’s poll, moving to No. 3

And for those of you clamoring to see Roosevelt in the top-10, here you go: The Roughriders (unbeaten in Washington) jump in at No. 8, taking the place of former No. 8 Issaquah, one of the teams they beat last week. Issaquah, a team I still believe can do some damage at state, drops to the “others” list.

There is a bit more movement in Class 3A. Meadowdale falls from fifth to eighth after losing to Jackson (and the Timberwolves become a definite 4A team to watch). Bainbridge, Holy Names and West Valley of Yakima (which beat Meadowdale over the holiday break), each move up a spot. Lakeside, which lost to Garfield during a holiday tournament in a game that wasn’t originally reported, slides to No. 9 — even though the Lions mauled previously unbeaten Cleveland by 33.

Mercer Island’s troubles continued and the Islanders drop out of this week’s poll, leaving the No. 10 spot open. I debated between Liberty and Enumclaw (which has won seven in a row after an 0-2 start), but decided the Patriots deserve the nod with their 9-1 record.
