UPDATE: Stanwood football coach Dick Abrams resigns

Dick Abrams has resigned after seven years as football coach for the Stanwood Spartans. Abrams has coached 33 years, the last 15 as a head coach for Stanwood, Jackson and Marysville-Pilchuck.

“Now, at the end of the football season, I felt that it was the right time to move on,” he said. “Now it’s time to explore some different opportunities.”

Abrams (whose 56th birthday is Thursday) said he will continue to teach physical education at Stanwood and hopes to someday coach football at the small college level.

“I have so many really good memories: all the kids i had the opportunity to work with, being a part of the community, working with the coaching staffs that I’ve had,” Abrams said.

Some of his best on-field memories include winning the league title in the last game of the season at Snohomish in 2004. The Spartans went 7-1 in league that season and clinched the WesCo North with a 25-17 win against the Panthers.

Abrams — who had a 36-31 record at Stanwood, with one league title — said over 20 Spartans went on to play college football in his seven years as coach. Stanwood also won the very first Sportsmanship Award presented by the Snohomish County Officials Association.
