Federal Way 71, Decatur 63, FINAL

Final. In a back and forth game, FW controlled the end of the game and led for the final five and half minutes. Michael Hale III finished with a team-high 20 points, 14 in the second half, and three steals. Cole Dickerson, in his first game healthy from a lingering stomach flu, had 17 points (8-11 FG), seven rebounds, two blocks (including a big swat down the stretch) and two assists.

Decatur sophomore Jerron Smith led all scorers with 22 points. He was 5-6 from behind the arc. Jordan McCloud added 20 points on a flawless 10 of 10 shooting performance from the field. The key stat was turnovers (Decatur had 25, FW 12). The Eagles scored 33 points off turnovers.

Final. Federal Way wins a tough one 71-63. More to come later.

End of third qtr: Still back and forth with no team having more than a four-point lead all game. Hale III had 10 points in the qtr and has 16 now. Jerron Smith hit two three’s and has 19 points. Jordan McCloud (Decatur) and Cole Dickerson (FW) each have 16 points on eight FG’s made.

Halftime: I have some extra stats here. Decatur is shooting 68.4% from the field (13-19) but also has 13 turnovers. The Gators are also shooting 4-5 from behind the arc with Jerron Smith and Marcus Tibbs each with a pair. Jordan McCloud has 8 points on 4-of-4 shooting and 5 rebounds.

FW shot 51.9% from the field (14-27) and has 7 turnovers. Cole Dickerson has 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. FW shot 3-of-7 from behind the arc, two by Forbes and one by Isiah Umipig. The Eagles also have 18 points off turnovers.

Halftime: A really entertaining second quarter has the score 34-33 Federal Way at halftime. Decatur sophomore Jerron Smith leads all scorers with 13 points, he had 10 in the second quarter with a couple three-pointers and a huge dunk. Marcus Tibbs and Jordan McCloud each have 8 points.

For Federal Way Cole Dickerson has made six field-goals for a team-high 12 points. Michael Hale III got off to a slow start against his former team and has six points — all scored in the second quarter. Jeffrey Forbes has hit a couple three-pointers and has seven points.

End of 1st qtr: It was a sloppy start for both teams with turnovers and missed shots. FW guard Jeff Forbes hit a three-pointer with 18 seconds left to give the Eagles 15-14 lead.

UPDATE: Things took a little longer than expected with a keynote speaker and a band. Tipoff is now slated for about 3:15.

UPDATE: Due to a delay in the tribute to Martin Luther King Jr., tipoff is now scheduled for 2:45.

Pregame: Less than 30 minutes until tipoff for this great rivalry game. FW beat Decatur in the Class 4A semifinals last year and both teams are ranked in the top four in the Class 4A rankings this year (FW #3, Decatur #4).

There’s a little added drama in the match up this year, as FW senior guard Michael Hale III played for the Gators last year.
