The latest news and analysis on high-school sports around the Seattle area

Wednesday Morning Stars

1. Josh Smith, Kentwood, boys basketball. Smith had 39 points — get this, his fifth game of 30 or more this season — to lead Kentwood to a very impressive 72-47 win against a good Auburn Riverside team. Kentwood is really rolling right now, and the Conks got my first-place vote in Class 4A in the AP boys basketball poll today.

2. Heather Restrepo, Auburn, girls basketball. In a win against Kent-Meridian, Restrepo scored 27 points to lead the Trojans.

3. O’Dea boys basketball. No, the Irish apparently aren’t done yet. Last night’s win against Rainier Beach, 66-60 in double overtime, was one of the best wins for O’Dea in the past couple years. Jalen Ward, a freshman, hit five of six free throws in the second overtime for the Irish.

For Rainier Beach, it was the second double-overtime loss in the past two days, but the Vikings certainly weren’t alone among the teams who stayed late at the HecEd on Monday night and came out a bit flat on Tuesday. That’s the tough thing when you have an event on a school night go until 10:30 p.m. Franklin trailed against Eastside Catholic going into the fourth quarter on Tuesday before the Quakers won, and Garfield survived a challenge from Bothell and won 65-62.
