Brazilian-born Vini Oliveira, a former standout at Sammamish, was named the winner of the Seattle Sounders FC SuperSearch on Sunday. Based on the evaluations of the team’s front office, Oliveira was judged as the best talent of the 600+ hopefuls that were were competing for a coveted roster spot on the new Major League Soccer franchise.
Former local prep star one day, professional athlete the next.
Oliveira, 20, was the KingCo 3A Player of the Year his senior year and led his team to a fourth-place finish at state two years ago — a tournament I covered. I distinctly remember his bright yellow shoes as well as his exceptional speed and skill.

After high school, the forward went to Bellevue Community College. He was finally named to the team after an hour-long TV special and joined the team for training camp in California today.
