Here’s is a first for the season — there are no changes in the girls rankings this week. The only ranked team to lose last week was Meadowdale, No. 9 in 3A, and that was to Jackson, No. 10 in 4A.
You’ll notice that Hanford, No. 10 in 3A, has five losses rather than four. The Falcons didn’t lose last week. I somehow missed an earlier loss and they should have been 11-5 rather than 12-4. My bad. Two of those losses were to No. 3 West Valley of Yakima. The other three have been to 4A teams, including one to No. 3 Pasco. Hanford started slowly at 2-3 but is 11-2 since, including an overtime loss to 4A Walla Walla on Jan. 31 (the Falcons beat the same team in OT earlier this season).
I’m still convinced Hanford belongs in the top-10, although you could certainly argue that Mercer Island or perhaps Liberty should get the nod. MI has won eight in a row since that 18-point loss to Bellevue on Jan. 9. Liberty is 5-0 since losing back-to-back to Juanita and MI. Who’s better right now? You can find out tomorrow as the two teams play with the KingCo 3A/2A title on the line.
Two other big bouts involving 4A ranked teams are on the schedule tomorrow. No. 7 Auburn Riverside and No. 8 Federal Way square off in a tiebreaker game at Auburn after splitting their regular-season games. This will decide the SPSL North’s 2-3 seeds to West Central District. No. 1 Lewis and Clark puts its unbeaten record on the line against No. 6 Mead.
The KingCo 4A Conference continues to be ultra-competitive. The “others” list now incudes six KingCo teams (it could have been eight) because it was either leave them all out or include them all with the way they are beating each other up. Those will be some battle-tested teams in the post-season, for sure.
