A hard foul during a Class 5A regional semifinal playoff game incited an all-out brawl between players and fans from both G.W. Carver and Valley High schools on Tuesday.
This happened at the Alabama State University Acadome in Montgomery, Alabama.
Both benches emptied after a scuffle broke out between two players after a hard foul during the fourth quarter. Some fans entered the melee on the court and fights also broke out in the stands.
ASU spokesman Kenneth Mullinax said 10 to 12 juveniles were detained by Montgomery police.
Mullinax said security was sufficient for the tournament and the fight was “a very rare event.”
Maybe not as rare as we like to think.
The semifinal was suspended, and Talladega (the winner of the other semifinal) was deemed the regional champion and advanced to state. Both Carver’s and Valley’s basketball programs were placed on restrictive probation and are banned from the postseason.
