FINAL — Rainier Beach boys 49, Capital 37

Final — Sorry for the lack of updates, the blog software was on the fritz for a couple minutes. Capital pulled to within 42-37 with 1:36 left, but the Vikings scored the last seven points of the game to win 49-37.

Corey Stern finishes with a triple-double: 13 points, 21 rebounds and 10 blocks. The blocks ties a tournament record for a single game. Najee Ali and Robert Harris each had 10 points for Beach.

Jody Ruiz led Capital with 12 points.

2:17 4th qtr — Beach struggling at the line to preserve its lead. Only 2-7 FTs in the quarter. Vikings still up 40-35.

4:46 4th qtr — Capital goes on a 6-0 run to cut the Beach lead to 38-33. The Vikings are struggling on both ends.

6:44 4th qtr — That’s a 10-0 run for the Vikings now. Beach leads 38-27.

End of 3rd qtr — RB has a 34-27 lead. Unofficially I have Stern with 8 blocks, which would make him two blocks short of a triple-double as well as a tie for the tournament record in a game.

0:35.1 3rd qtr — A flying elbow gives Beach the ball with a 34-27 lead.

2:47 3rd qtr — Marquis Harris with a big three-pointer ends a 9-2 Capital run. It’s 31-27 Vikings.

4:05 3rd qtr — Colin Bossio scores and is fouled. His game-tying FT attempt rims off. Beach leads 28-27.

5:24 3rd qtr — Beach coach Mike Bethea is going to stomp a hole in the court the way his Vikings are playing to start the quarter. More turnovers and settling for jump shots. Taylor Ross goes to the line for Capital, makes 1-2 FTs, and it’s 26-23.

6:26 3rd qtr — Jody Ruiz hits a jumper, then goes to the line and sinks a pair of FTs. Beach leads now 26-22.

Halftime — RB forward Corey Stern leads everybody with 11 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Beach shot a pedestrian 9-25 FG (36%), 1-8 3FG and 7-15 FT.

But Capital was worse: 5-25 FG (20%), 0-3 3FG and 8-15 FT.

Halftime — Rainier Beach takes a 26-18 lead into the locker room. More stats to come.

0:40.1 2nd qtr — Capital again the line. The Cougars have made three FGs this quarter but have gone to the line six times. Beach leads 26-18.

2:06 2nd qtr — Bossio goes 1-2 from the line for Capital, cuts the Beach lead to 26-14.

3:01 2nd qtr — A pair of lay-ups for Stern and the 6-foot-7 senior forward has now scored 10 of Beach’s last 12 points. RB up 24-11.

3:47 2nd qtr — Both teams in the double bonus and spending most their time at the line. Stern splits another pair. Vikings lead 20-11.

4:38 2nd qtr — Stern splits a pair of FTs for Beach, which leads 17-9.

5:53 2nd qtr — Both teams in the bonus now, so there should be a lot of free throws to come in the half. Capital misses the front end of a one-and-one. It’s 16-9 Beach.

6:39 2nd qtr — A 6-0 Beach run forces a Capital timeout. The Vikings lead 14-8.

End of 1st qtr — Robert Harris drains a three-pointer for Beach just before the buzzer. Not a great start for Vikings, they’ll be happy they have the lead after that quarter. Beach 8-6.

1:34 1st qtr — More turnovers for the Vikings. Ali splits a pair of FTs for RB to cut the Capital lead to 6-5.

2:28 1st qtr — Jody Ruiz with a jumper for Capital. Then Max Schade goes to the line, makes it 6-4 Cougars.

3:28 1st qtr — Najee Ali gets Beach on the board with a putback, then Lonnie Pearson makes a lay-up. After a failed Capital trip to the line, Beach leads 4-2.

4:48 1st qtr — The Vikings are now 0-4 from the line to go along with the turnovers and missed shots. It’s 2-0 Capital.

5:17 1st qtr — Beach missed a couple FTs, then Capital’s Colin Bossio hits a jumper to get us going. Cougars 2-0.

6:20 1st qtr — A scrambled start to this one. Still scoreless.

Pregame: Just about underway in our final first-round game of the day.
