Live game blog — Rainier Beach vs. Columbia River

FINAL: Columbia River 46, Rainier Beach 45.

5.5 seconds left: Kyle Thurston makes two free throws. River 46, Beach 42.

17.4 seconds left: A travel on Rainier Beach. Rviier getting the ball back.

34.8 seconds left. An Echols runner cuts the lead to 44-42, and then Beach gets the ball back on a River turnover.

1:03 left, 4th: Najee Ali misses a shot in the lane, and River gets the rebound. Kyle Legato gets the rebound and is fouled by Corey Stern (his fifth foul). He makes one of two. Columbia River 44, Rainier Beach 40

1:30 left, 4th: Kyle Thurston runs in front of a RB pass, gets fouled, and makes both free throws. Columbia River 43, RB 40.

2:11 left, 4th: Bjornstad blocks Stern right by the rim. River still ahead 41-40.

3:15 left, 4th: An inside basket by Bjornstad puts Columbia River ahead 41-40.

5:12 left, 4th: This time, a monster Bjornstad block is too good to be true. It’s called goaltending. Then we have four made baskets in just a minute, wnad Beach leads 40-37

End 3rd quarter: Columbia River 32, Rainier Beach 32.

55.7 left, 3rd: Throw it down, big man! Bjornstad has a monstrous dunk. Then he makes one of two free-throws to tie it at 32.

2:10 left, 3rd: Wanted: a free-throw shooter. The teams are a combined 2 for their last 6 from the line. Beach leads 32-29.

3:34 left, 3rd: With a nice basket inside, Corey Stern puts Beach ahead 31-28.

6:10 left, 3rd Q: Rainier Beach grabs the lead back, 27-26, on a Robert Harris jumper.

GIRLS UPDATE: Holy Names leads 47-38 with 51 seconds left.

Halftime: Columbia River 24, Rainier Beach 23. Steven Bjornstad scores his 12th point of the night with 15 seconds left on a nice cut and lay-in, and the Chieftains walk into halftime with the lead. I’ve got to wonder if Beach is going to lay on the press here in the second half.

1:35 left, 2nd: Najee Ali makes a tough runner while getting fouled, and Beach retakes the lead, 23-22.

2:53 left, 2nd: After Columbia River briefly took a 20-18 lead, Aaron Fuller made a pair of free throws to tie it at 20.

4:59 left, 2nd: Bjornstad makes a pair of free throws, and it’s tied at 18.

6:15 left, 2nd: Echols is red hot, with another three-pointer. Beach leads 18-13.

End 1st quarter: Rainier Beach 13, Columbia River 11. The Vikings take the lead on a Najee Ali layup at the end of the quarter. Just before that, RB senior Corey Stern, who tied the blocks record with 10 yesterday, got a little bit of his own medicin with a block from Bjornstad — who, by the way, averages 4.6 blocks a game.

1:11 left, 1st: Another Echols three-pointer, and Beach has the lead, 11-10.

2:07 left, 1st: Columbia River is in a zone, with the big man in the middle, forcing Beach to shoot from outside. Jaamon Echols just made a three-pointer to cut CR’s lead to 10-8.

3:38 left, 1st: Both teams are veing very deliberate to start. CR leads 6-5 early.

6:31 left, 1st quarter: Get used to this name tonight: Steven Bjornstad. The Chieftains’ 6-foot-10 center is going to have to be a huge factor. He just stuffed in an alley-oop, but Beach leads 3-2.

It’s OK if you want to yawn. It’s late night, especially for a school night. We’re going to have a 10 p.m. tipoff for this boys quarterfinal, which is what you get when you have an overtime game in the first game and lots of foul calls.
