Yep, it’s gonna be one of those years in softball.
Within a couple of days of the opening rankings for 2009, three of the top-10 teams in 4A lost — then-No. 3 Auburn Riverside to Auburn, then-No. 5 Inglemoor to Bothell and then-No. 6 Jefferson to Kentlake.
And, with many on spring break last week, some teams didn’t even play.
So, who stays in, who drops out and who jumps in? You can see details below. My worst fear is that KingCo 4A softball is going to be a lot like KingCo 4A girls basketball, and I had some exasperating weeks trying to sort that out this past winter.
Looks like the SPSL 4A North Division could be the same way. I still believe in Auburn Riverside, which means watch out for Auburn, now on the bubble. I nearly put Kentlake in the top-10, but then remembered their 12-0 loss to Kentwood. Kentwood has two losses, but they were to No. 1 Emerald Ridge and a Stadiuim team that is knocking on the door.
Instead, the nod went to Jackson, which is still unbeaten.
I really have a close eye on unbeaten Beamer and 1-1 Redmond (I had the Mustangs in my preliminary rankings, after last year’s third-place finish, until they lost to Snohomish; I’ll know more when they get a few more games in). It’s a big week for 6-0 Beamer with games against Puyallup, Rogers and Emerald Ridge.
In Class 3A, the only ranked teams that lost (Union, Everett and Lynnwood) fell against some pretty good 4A teams (in order, Walla Walla, Arlington and Jackson. So there wasn’t much penalty there.
Any help with incorrect records is greatly appreciated. Sedro-Woolley should have been 4-1 last week (not 4-2), and is now 5-1.
