Thursday Morning Stars

It’s time to get back to basics this morning. We’ve kind of been going overboard on the stars this week as there have been so many great performances. But part of the idea is to single out some of the best of the best (and spread some of the wealth around), so that’s what I’m going to do today.

There were a ton of baseball and softball games played yesterday (finally!) with numerous noteworthy efforts. However, I am going to focus on some other sports today (but just so diamond fans don’t feel totally slighted, here’s a quick shoutout to Michael Sherwin of Auburn Riverisde (2 homers in a 10-8 baseball win over Federal Way) and Brooke Richard of Juanita (5-for-5 in a 12-3 softball win over Liberty).

1. Carter Appleton, Lakeside boys soccer. Appleton scored three goals and assisted on the fourth as the Lions, ranked No. 2 in Washington in Class 3A, beat South Anchorage (No. 1 in Alaska), 4-1.

2. Jefferson girls tennis team. The Raiders ended Kentridge’s 18-match SPSL 4A North win streak, 3-2. Freshmen Krista Nakamura and Breanna Ziccarelli rallied for a key point in No. 3 doubles after trailing 6-2, 4-1.

3. Redmond girls golf team. The Mustangs beat Garfield, 230 strokes to 330, for their 60th consecutive KingCo 4A victory over the past six years. Kara Zitzman earned medalist honors.
