The latest news and analysis on high-school sports around the Seattle area

Thursday Morning Stars

1. Melanie Vertrees, Kent-Meridian, track & field. Vertrees tied the state’s top mark this season by jumping 5 feet, 7 inches, in the high jump. That tied the jump set earlier this season by Kentwood’s Linsdey Moore, and interestingly enough Vertrees’ jump came in a dual meet with Kentwood.

2. Julia Nealer, Lynnwood, softball. A day after her 15-inning shutout of Mountlake Terrace, Nealer came back and shutout Meadowdale, throwing a one-hitter with 16 strikeouts.

3. Blake Lively, Lake Washington, baseball. Lively hit a three-run double in the bottom of the seventh to give Lake Washington a 4-3 victory against Bothell. That guarantees the Lake Washington at least a tie for first place in the KingCo Crown division.
