My best guess: state baseball predictions

The baseball state tournament is as unpredictable as a state tournament can get. Baseball can be a cruel game, one in which the most talented teams often do not win. A 100-win team in the majors still lost more than 35 percent of the time. And in the high-school state tournaments, we have seen undefeated teams lose in the first round and .500 teams win the championship.

So perhaps this is a futile effort. But I’ll make it anyway, and please realize this is all in good fun. There are two things I look for in a playoff team: a pitching staff deeper than one ace, and a lineup with few enough holes that it won’t likely go cold. With that said, here is how I see the 4A and 3A tournaments unfolding (and feel free to post your own predictions in the comments; we can compare brackets when it’s over):

Class 4A

Everett regional

Kentwood over Newport

Snohomish over Olympia

Predicted regional champ: Snohomish.

Richland regional

University over Kamiakin

Richland over Kamiak

Predicted regional champ: Richland

Kent regional

Puyallup over Inglemoor

Lake Washington over Central Kitsap

Predicted regional champ: Lake Washington

Tacoma regional

Issaquah over South Kitsap

Tahoma over Marysville-Pilchuck

Predicted regional champ: Tahoma

Final four

Richland over Snohomish

Tahoma over Lake Washington

Predicted 4A champ: Richland.

Class 3A

Mt. Vernon regional

O’Dea over North Kitsap

Shorecrest over Franklin Pierce

Predicted regional champ: O’Dea

Yakima regional

Mt. Rainier over Hanford

West Valley over Lynnwood

Predicted regional champ: West Valley

Bellevue regional

Bainbridge over Columbia River

Bellevue over Highline

Predicted regional champ: Bellevue

Centralia regional

Bishop Blanchet over Auburn Mountainview

Timberline over Liberty

Predicted regional champ: Bishop Blanchet

Final four

O’Dea over West Valley

Bishop Blanchet over Bellevue

Predicted 3A champ: Bishop Blanchet.

So there it is. Most likely, all of it will crumble by 1 p.m. Saturday, when the first of the opening-round games are finished. The Times will be at most of the regionals this weekend, and I’ll be going down to Centralia for the 3A regional that features The Times’ three top-ranked teams: No. 1 Timberline, No. 2 Bishop Blanchet and No. 3 Liberty. Make sure to follow our Twitter feed for baseball and soccer updates Saturday.

Also, don’t forget about Archbishop Murphy and Cedarcrest in the 2A bracket (playing in Bellingham), and Bellevue Christian is in the 1A field (playing at Castle Rock).
