State softball predictions (guesses)

If you’ve read many of my blog posts before, you should know I am not a fan of predicting games or tournaments. But I’m going to give it my best shot (guess).

It’s not a matter of picking for one team or against another, believe me. In high-school sports, I truly believe just about anything can happen. Few expected Eastlake to win the 4A title over nationally-ranked Shadle Park of Spokane last year, remember?

But here goes:

4A

First round — Emerald Ridge over Kelso, Rogers (Puyallup) over Stanwood, Auburn Riverside over Lake Washington, Walla Walla over Cascade, Mountainview (Vancouver) over Kennewick; Mountlake Terrace over Kentwood, Central Kitsap over Kamiakin (Kennewick), Redmond over Jefferson.

Quarterfinals — Rogers over Emerald Ridge, Walla Walla over Auburn Riverside, Mountlake Terrace over Mountainview, Central Kitsap over Remdond.

Semifinals — Rogers over Walla Walla, Mountlake Terrace over Central Kitsap.

Championship — Rogers over Mountlake Terrace.

Hey — I gave Rogers the nod at No. 1 coming into the week, so no need to change my mind now. That said, I could imagine just about any of the quarterfinalists going all the way.

3A

First round — Columbia River over West Seattle, Sedro-Woolley over Holy Names (could be an upset in this one, though), North Central of Spokane over Prairie (toss-up), Juanita over Mount Rainier, Bainbridge over Kennedy (if Kennedy plays well, this could go either way, too), Union of Vancouver over Lynnwood (great pitching duel), Enumclaw over Bishop Blanchet (another minor upset), Shadle Park over Port Angeles.

Quarterfinals — Sedro-Woolley over Columbia River, Juanita over North Central, Union over Bainbridge (tough showdown this early), Shadle Park over Enumclaw.

Semifinals — Juanita over Sedro-Woolley, Union over Shadle Park (but never count a Shadle team out).

Championship — Juanita over Union.

But, again, these things rarely go as expected. I hope you can get down to S.E.R.A. in Tacoma tomorrow and Saturday and find out for yourself. That’s where I’ll be.
