More state softball (Rogers upset)

It’s a bad day to be ranked No. 1 in the state in softball. After Juanita lost in the opening round of the 3A tournament, Rogers of Puyallup fell 4-1 to Stanwood in Class 4A.

Oh, and former No. 1 Emerald Ridge of Puyallup also lost, 8-2 to Kelso. So that ER-Rogers matchup some of us expected in the quarterfinals is now a loser-out affair.

Stanwood and Kelso square off at 5 p.m. with a semifinal berth on the line.

In other early 4A games, Auburn Riverside blanked Lake Washington, 5-0, and second-ranked Walla Walla advanced with a 2-0 win over gutsy Cascade of Everett on a two-out, two-run home run by Alicia Baker in the bottom of the seventh. AR and Walla Walla meet at 5 p.m.

The other 4A openers (Mountain View-Kennewick, Kentwood-Mountlake Terrace, Kamiakina-Central Kitsap and Jefferson-Redmond) got started about 30 minutes ago.

In the later 3A openers, Port Angeles pulled a 6-2 stunner over No. 3 Shadle Park, while Enumclaw outlasted Bishop Blanchet in eight innings, 8-6.
