State soccer thread — West Valley (Yakima) 3, Franklin Pierce 2. FINAL.

FINAL: West Valley wins 3-2 and goes on to play Shorecrest in the championship game. Franklin Pierce fought hard and had its chances, but came up just short.

73rd minute: SAVE! West Valley had a chance to potentially clinch the game, but FP goalkeeper Pedro Arreola stretches long to save a penalty kick.

71st minute: GOAL! Right as I was going to update how FP needed a goal to get back in it, Cardinals’ Derek Johnson won a physical battle on the goal line to just get the ball into the goal. It’s 3-2 West Valley.

50th minute: GOAL! Add one more for the Rams, who lead 3-1 now thanks to a goal by freshman Jesse Esquivel.

HALFTIME: West Valley leads 2-1, but a big goal for the Cardinals just before the break.

39th minute: GOAL! Franklin Pierce pulls one back on a penalty kick by James Hoag. Earlier Stefano Louenberger earned the spot kick as he was taken down in the box.

36th minute: GOAL! Junior Ayala gets a goal of his own with a nice turn in the penalty box and a shot to the far post.

28th minute: GOAL! West Valley takes the lead when senior Khalil Basmeh redirected a pass/shot by Junior Ayala into the net. Rams lead 1-0.

21st minute: The Rams are turning up the pressure, but Cardinals goalkeeper Pedro Arreola has done well to keep them out. Still scoreless but there have been chances abound.

8th minute: Still scoreless here. The run of play looks about even so far and the teams feel each other out.
