FINAL: Shorecrest wins 2-1 to advance to the Class 3A state championship game. Time to write up the story, I’ll be posting scoring updates from the next 3A semifinal between Franklin Pierce and West Valley of Yakima.
77th minute: I’m going down to the field for quotes. I’ll update the final score ASAP.
75th minute: Not much time left now. It’s desperation time for the Islanders.
73rd minute: A dangerous free-kick opportunity for M.I., who benefits from a questionable foul call. Chris Morris’ 22-yard attempt is blocked by the wall and another Islanders shot is blocked too. Shorecrest clears.
70th minute: Actually I count 11 men out there for Shorecrest, so it must’ve been deemed a yellow-red card, which you see sometimes. Paden is ejected but the Scots can still play full-strength without him.
67th minute: RED CARD! Shorecrest’s Glenn Paden comes in late on another tackle and is charged with his second bookable offense. The Scots will have to protect the lead with just 10 men now.
63rd minute: Led by Terrel and Harris, the Scots defense looks impenetrable at this point. Shorecrest is still boasting most of the possession and scoring chances.
56rd minute: Shorecrest defender Nick Terrel just cleared a ball over the roof of the grandstands here, much to the fans delight. M.I. is doing a much better job of creating chances now. Chris Morris had a fun-looking bicycle kick shot go wide moments ago.
53rd minute: Michael Harris is having about as dominant game a holding midfielder can. He’s been the main reason the Islanders can’t control the ball in their offensive third.
48th minute: Shorecrest is still getting the better of the chances at this point. Since the first 10 minutes, the Scots have controlled most of the game in my view.
44th minute: The next goal is the crucial one. Not sure M.I. will be able to get two more, so they’ll have to be selective on the chances they take in pressing for the equalizer.
HALFTIME: Shorecrest takes a 2-1 lead into the locker room thanks to the world-class effort from Harris. The UW commit and Gatorade state player of the year had been strong all game — in the air, tackling, on the ball — but that could well be the shot that puts the Scots into the championship game.
First half analysis after the jump…
36th minute: GOAL! Shorecrest’s Michael Harris takes the free kick and hits an absolutely magical 35-yard strike just under the crossbar for the go-ahead goal. What a remarkable goal! Scots lead 2-1.
36th minute: M.I.’s Jed Jacobson crashes into Scots senior Jonathan Cho in a hard tackle from behind. Cho is shaken up and Jacobson enters the book with a yellow card.
32nd minute: Mercer Island is stuck on its half of the field. The control issues Shorecrest had early are now with the Islanders.
28th minute: The Scots have really controlled the last 15 minutes of the game.
23rd minute: GOAL! Shorecrest’s Jonathan Cho collects a loose ball in the box and fires a shot into the upper corner past Marowitz. Cho subsequently got a yellow card for the celebration. We’re tied 1-1.
20th minute: Marowitz leaves the net to try to clear a through ball, but the ball falls to the feet of Shorecrest’s Eli Blauser. His 20-yard shot on an open net sails wide!
20th minute: I would be surprised if a couple more goals aren’t scored in this one. Shorecrest is looking dangerous as always on those set pieces — particularly Nick Terrel’s long throws — and M.I.’s counter attack one too.
16th minute: M.I. goalkeeper Forrest Marowitz has punched away a couple dangerous balls in the box. Strong showing from out all-area goalie so far.
12th minute: Scots have settled down a bit and it’s now a 50-50 game. Shorecrest’s Glenn Paden just got a yellow card for what looked to be a late tackle.
6th minute: Islanders controlling the action here early on. The Shorecrest defense is struggling a little bit and the Scots are having trouble keeping possession.
1st minute: GOAL! 52 seconds in M.I.’s Diego Corvalan pounces on a poor clearance and buries a 15-yard shot into the corner. What a start for the Islanders. Mercer Island 1-0.
1st minute: We’re under way here. Shorecrest has a HUGE supporting section compared to the Islanders.
Pregame: Let me know if there’s something specific you want to know.
M.I. is wearing the dark maroon uniforms — will the 70+ degree weather affect them more than the white-wearing Scots?
Pregame: Introductions are about to begin. I’ll try to update as often as possible from this highly-anticipated matchup between the top-ranked Islanders and No. 2 Scots.
