I mentioned yesterday there undoubtedly would be some upsets at the state softball tournaments, and it didn’t take long for the first one as upstart Mount Rainier of Des Moines knocked off top-ranked Juanita in the opening round of the 3A tournament this morning, 6-0.
The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, then tacked on three more in the fifth and two in the seventh. B.J. Mipalar pitched a four-hit shutout and the Rebels, who had not lost in 3A competition this sesaon, hurt themselves with four errors.
Mount Rainier plays Prairie in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m.
Kennedy won’t win a third-straight title. Bainbridge made sure of that with a 6-1 win as Lindsay Willmann tossed a one-hitter. The Spartans face second-ranked Union of Vancouver at 3 p.m. Union blanked Lynnwood, 2-0.
Holy Names advanced to the quarterfinals, 3-1 over Sedro-Woolley and faces Columbia River at 3 p.m. River beat West Seattle, 4-2.
The other first-round 3A games (Enumclaw-Bishop Blanchet and Port Angeles-Shadle Park) are under way now along with four of the 4A openers. The last four 4A openers are scheduled for 1 p.m. and those winners have 7 p.m. quarterfinals.
It’s hectic down here at S.E.R.A. in Tacoma, so I won’t be able to blog every score. But the WIAA is doing a great job of keeping the bracket updated, including linescores.
