So here we go with the initial state rankings for girls soccer. Just to get this out of the way early, we will only be running 4A and 3A rankings this year, as always.
Keep in mind, I have seen just one team practice and am basing a lot of these rankings off the opinions of area coaches. I am definitely wide-open to all of your thoughts to help me spot some top teams and players.
I think last year I put Skyline — which eventually won the 4A title — on the bubble to start the season. Even worse, I didn’t even have Kentwood on the radar (I know… I know…), so I fully expect this to be a fluid process. They tend to work themselves out throughout the year.
Let’s get to it. We start out with the defending-champion Spartans on top in 4A. Don Braman‘s team graduates just three seniors from his title team and has plenty of pieces in place for a repeat run. For my money, defending champs are No. 1 until someone takes it from them or there’s a very obvious other choice.
The KingCo 4A League looks very strong again this year. Eastlake has a solid group of players returning (but also loses a few as will be detailed in a story tomorrow). Woodinville, the state runners-up, also graduated some great players.
There is also strong representation in the 4A ranks down south, and I expect those leagues (SPSL and Narrows) to be competitive. Jackson also starts out up high after a 4th-place finish, plus the T’Wolves return 10 starters.
To 3A, again defending champion Everett starts out on top. The Seagulls outscored state opponents 17-3 in 2008 and return some top-tier talent in Sele Vance and Annie Sittauer.
A lot of the usual suspects fill out the next couple teams. Kennedy returns a good group and Lakeside also didn’t lose so much. Down in Clark County they always play some good soccer and both Camas and Union start the year in the rankings.
Again, if you have any thoughts, please share. There is no such thing as too much information.
