State volleyball rankings: Week 5

It was kind of ho-hum last week in Class 4A volleyball, but there’s some shake-up in the 3A state poll.

And look for some possible movement in both classifications next week after the big Spokane Crossover Classic Friday and Saturday. I’ll have more on that tournament later in the week, but I’ve seen the pools and there are some interesting matchups from the get-go. For instance, No. 1 Mead and No. 8 Richland are in the same pool.

And there are some other key matches this week leading into the tournament — such as Mead vs. No. 9 Lewis and Clark tomorrow night. Mead won a nonleague contest between the two back on Sept. 10, 3-0. Richland faces Eisenhower of Yakima tomorrow, too. Remember, Ike was once in the rankings.

But let me talk about the 3A poll for a minute. I’ve decided it’s time to give Mount Spokane a little more respect and have jumped the team from No. 5 to No. 3. Remember, the Wildcats have only lost to Mead, and that match went five sets.

Seattle Prep gave Eastside Catholic a great match last week, losing in five, so only slips one spot to No. 4. Prep plays No. 1 Bishop Blanchet on Wednesday.

Another interesting 3A match this week is No. 5 Camas against No. 7 Prairie on Thursday. Both have only lost to Skyview, which is No. 5 in 4A.

Auburn Mountainview is back in the poll at No. 9, and to be honest never should have been dropped out last week. Again, I saw incorrect results that showed the Lions losing to Sumner, when in fact they won, 3-0. Then they took care of business and beat Timberline (former No. 9).

The only newcomer this week is North Kitsap at No. 10. The Vikings remained unbeaten by defeating a pretty good 4A Central Kitsap team last week. They replace Shorecrest, which suffered losses to Stanwood and Meadowdale.

Go out and catch some volleyball this week and let me know who looks good, OK?
