State volleyball rankings: Week 6

Sorry to keep you waiting today. Is the suspense killin’ you?

Hopefully you’ve heard or read the results of the Spokane Crossover Classic, where Mead solidified its position at No. 1 in 4A. The big disappointment was Graham-Kapowsin (the Eagles were third in their pool behind Colfax and University of Spokane), which immediately raised my eyebrows.

But I spoke with coach Loni Parks this afternoon and she said she was without three starters, including setter Taylr Burton and MH Kaitlyn Malloy. All are expected back soon, so I am giving G-K a break, based on performances leading up to the tournament, and leaving the team at No. 3.

Auburn Riverside moves up a spot to No. 5 after its solid showing. The Ravens reached the semifinals before losing to Sandpoint, Idaho, in three close sets.

Jackson drops out after losing to 3A Shorecrest last week and I debated between Southridge of Kennewick and Monroe for that No. 10 spot (both have been ranked earlier). I went with Monroe, giving WesCo a representative rather than seeing three Big Nine schools in there.

But the big news is in 3A, where there’s a new team at the top — Mount Spokane. How good are the Wildcats?

“I think they should be ranked No. 1,” Bishop Blanchet coach Matt Chang said, citing their all-around play.

Remember — Blanchet has been No. 1 the past couple of weeks. So, Blanchet dips to No. 2 and is a little over an hour away from taking on No. 3 Eastside Catholic at EC — you’ve still got time to get there!

Camas, formerly No. 5, falls out of the rankings after losing to both Columbia River and Prairie last week. Everyone behind the Papermakers moves up a spot and the new No. 10 is…….West Valley of Yakima, which has held its own in that tough Big Nine.

Take a look at the complete rankings and feel free to share your thoughts.
