State girls soccer rankings: week seven

A wild week of soccer resulted in a massive shakeup in the rankings, in both the 4A and 3A classifications.

The strength of the KingCo 4A League finally got to Skyline, as the defending champs lost to Woodinville 1-0 in a rematch of last year’s state title game. It was the Spartans first in-state loss of the year.

I was ready to launch the Falcons up in the rankings, but the schedule didn’t help WHS out any. After playing the defending state champ Tuesday, Woodinville had to play the 2007 champ Eastlake on Thursday, and lost 3-2.

Seemed like a big win for the Wolves, but earlier in the week EHS lost to Issaquah — winners of a handful 3A titles in the last couple years — on Tuesday 4-0.

You can imagine how tough it was to try to sort out the rankings after that. Those teams (Skyline, Eastlake, Issaquah, Woodinville) remind me of the big four in the English Premier League (Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal).

The result of the KingCo turmoil is a new top-ranked 4A team: Jackson of Mill Creek. The T’Wolves are 11-0-1, have outscored opponents 44-4 and returned 10 starters from last year’s team that finished fourth at state. A perfect Emerald Ridge teams jumps to second and the KingCo teams follow 3-6.

Over in 3A, Everett and Kennedy Catholic continue to hold strong at No. 1 and No. 2. The rest looks quite different.

Losses around the state allowed Holy Names to jump up after another strong week from the Cougars. West Valley of Yakima and the Greater Saint Helens teams each suffered losses, which forced some movement as well.

Big games on Thursday include: Kentwood/Tahoma, Jackson/Kamiak and Lakeside/Seattle Prep.

If you notice any inaccurate win-loss records, please let me know. Records are compiled by coach reports, media reports and the WIAA website.
