The biggest game in Mountlake Terrace history?

It’s less than a half hour until kickoff of a gigantic Wesco South game between host Mountlake Terrace and Kamiak.

How big is it? The winner goes to the playoffs.

If that’s Mountlake Terrace, it would be for the first time in school history. The Hawks have been around since 1961 – so this is kind of a big deal.

That’s apparent in their rooting section, which has filled up almost the entire right side of Edmonds Stadium here on Homecoming.

I caught up with Hawks coach Tony Umayam earlier this week, and he shared that not only would this be the first playoff berth in nearly a half century of existence but it would also be their first six-win season since 1974.

“The school and the community has been waiting for something like this for a long time,” said the sixth-year coach. “It’s one of the biggest games — if not the biggest — in school history.”

Before anyone hands the Hawks one of the South’s three playoff berths, Umayam is quick to note the storied program they’re facing.

“Kamiak is going to be well-prepared,” he said. “We understand that we’re going up against as successful a school, since the school’s inception, that Wesco South has seen the past 15 seasons. They’re real good and they have well-disciplined players.”

Umayam also added that nose tackle Chris Bennett, who missed last week’s 27-17 loss at Jackson with the flu, is expected to start.
