Great day of volleyball for SPSL teams

It’s been a great day for SPSL teams at the Class 4A state volleyball tournament here in Kennewick.

Three out of the four semifinalists are from the SPSL — Auburn Riverside, Curtis and Graham-Kapowsin. AR and Curtis will square off in one semifinal, while G-K takes on top-ranked Mead of Spokane in the other, both at 3:30. The championship match follows at 6:30.

I must tell you that Mead looked especially impressive today. The Panthers have been panting for a shot at this title since last year’s disappointing seventh-place finish. They had won five straight championships in a row before Olympia took them down in the quarterfinals last year, ending a 22-match win streak in the tournament.

So you can imagine how pleased Mead was to meet Olympia in the quarters again this year. It wasn’t even close — 25-9, 25-16, 25-12. The Panthers have hardly had to break a sweat here as they opened with a 3-0 victory over Tahoma (25-13, 25-13, 25-12).

G-K should provide more of a challenge.

I’m anxious to see that Curtis-Auburn Riverside match. Curtis is 2-0 against the Ravens this season, most recently winning in the district semifinals. Riverside hopes to win the one that counts the most, but the Vikings have a sweep in mind.

The final four matches of the day are in progress (Issaquah vs. Woodinville, Kamiak vs. Jackson, Kentwood vs. Lewis adn Clark and Skyview vs. Olympia), each with a state trophy on the line. The losers are eliminated.
