It’s been a 50-50 proposition for the Metro League thus far in the opening round of the Class 3A state volleyball tournament.
Seattle Prep advanced with a 3-1 victory over Peninsula, but Holy Names let a 2-0 lead over Capital slip away and lost in five.
Prep dominated Peninsula in the first set, 25-4, then watched the Seahawks scramble back to take the second, 25-23. It was all Prep from there, 25-6, 25-11. The Panthers face No. 4 Prairie in the quarterfinals at 6:30 (although I will warn you that we already are behind and it’s doubtful those matches will start on time. In fact, the 4A semifinals are going to be behind, too).
Holy Names had Capital on the ropes, but couldn’t close the deal. The Cougars don’t play again until 9 a.m. tomorrow, facing Timberline in a loser-out match. Timberline lost to top-ranked Mount Spokane, 3-1. Mount Spokane plays Capital in the quarterfinals.
Three of the remaining four first-round matches are underway, but the Bishop Blanchet-Auburn Mountainview contest won’t start for a few more minutes yet (that court is farther behind than the others).
I’ll be back with the results from those bouts.
