Bothell 4A semifinal quotes

It’s not fun to talk to coaches and players who lose games like this as their season — and sometimes high-school careers — come to an end.

Coach Tom Bainter was classy as always. He talked about the early mistakes Bothell made against Skyline.

“I’m real proud of our effort. You just can’t start like we started. We gave them 14 points…That was the difference, that was the difference. Our effort was great. We made too many mistakes to beat a team of that caliber. You can’t do those things that we did. But I loved the way our kids played with heart. I loved the way we fought to the end and bless their hearts.”

You can read more in my sidebar on Bothell that will be up soon on the website and in tomorrow’s paper.

Bainter took time to embrace Skyline quarterback Jake Heaps after the traditional handshakes.

“I told him he’s had a great career. I’ve enjoyed watching him and good luck next week and good luck in college. That’s a great athlete, and I’m glad he’s gone (said with a laugh). What a great kid.”

He had similar praise for the gutsy efforts of his own quarterback, Mitchell Muller.

“That’s been his whole season. He’s done some great things this year. He’s been a great leader and I just love the kid. I’m really proud of him. He fights like that all the way to the end. Had we got the ball back (at the end), he would have been out there scratching and clawing for another one.”
