Can somebody please tell me who has the best Class 3A team in the state?
I’ve wrestled with the question since before the season started. As you know, I went with Holy Names over defending-champion Kennedy in the preseason rankings. Both teams lost on Saturday — but both were playing quality 4A teams. Holy Names fell to 5-0 Newport, which would be in the rankings this week if there was any room. Kennedy lost to Auburn Riversides, which rises to No. 1 after a great 9-day stretch.
I did not see either game, but heard both teams looked good in stretches and fairly average in others.
But, for at least another week, Holy Names and Kennedy remain 1-2. Who else should it be?
I couldn’t quite justify putting Prairie (3-2) there, although the Falcons’ two losses were to very good out-of-state teams. Shadle Park is just 1-2, but both losses were close and, again, to larger schools (Lewis and Clark and Post Falls, Idaho). White River is 4-0 and Bonney Lake 5-0, but I’m not ready to put either of them at No. 1. Same for 4-0 Lakeside, although the Lions jump into the rankings this week at No. 8.
In 4A, there just seems to be so many top-notch teams. I’ve jumped Auburn Riverside to No. 1 after the Ravens beat Kentwood (last week’s No. 1) and Kennedy (a rematch of the 2008 3A state title game).
Lewis and Clark stays at No. 2 and Kentwood drops to No. 3. Issaquah continues to impress, especially with last Friday’s decisive victory over then-No. 4 Garfield. The Eagles crack the rankings at No. 6, right behind Woodinville. Garfield (which also lost to a very good Oregon City team) slips to No. 10.
Jackson, No. 9 last week, falls out of favor after losing to Edmonds-Woodway — a team I would love to get in that top-10, along with Newport, but at whose expense? Those two teams are at the top of my waiting list along with Skyview of Vancouver, which some folks are raving about.
Who have you seen that you can rave about, especially in 3A?
