Girls basketball rankings — Week 5

You won’t find any major changes in this week’s Class 4A girls basketball rankings, but I can’t say the same for 3A.

Mead of Spokane (No. 8 last week) is the only team to drop out of the 4A top-10 after suffering a pair of losses. I won’t be surprised to see the Panthers back in there down the road, though.

I looked long and hard at several teams for the one available spot, including unbeatens Kentlake, Newport and South Kitsap, along with 5-1 Edmonds-Woodway and 3-1 Skyview.

But Jackson gets the nod, returning to the rankings after an impressive week.

Both Kentlake and Newport have something working against them that they have no control over. Both are members of leagues that already have three teams in the top-10, and I just couldn’t rationalize a fourth at this point.

Kentlake is part of the SPSL North that includes No. 1 Auburn Riverside, No. 3 Kentwood and No. 4 Federal Way. Newport plays in the KingCo 4A Crest Division that features No. 7 Issaquah and No. 10 Garfield, plus No. 6 Woodinville is in the KingCo 4A Crown Division.

It’s been suggested that Newport is more deserving than Garfield, and we’ll definitely find out when those two teams square off on Jan. 15 — two days after the Bulldogs play Woodinville.

In 3A, Lakes earned a spot at No. 7 with back-to-back victories over White River and Bonney Lake, both previously unbeaten. Those two teams stay in the rankings at Nos. 8-9. Lakeside slips out after losing to both top-ranked Holy Names and South Kitsap. That was a tough call. Shorecrest moves up to No. 6, despite a loss to Jackson. I’m not totally sold on that move, but who else should be up there?

Auburn Mountainview continues to struggle, losing twice more, and drops off the list. That means Meadowdale is back in at No. 10 after that nice victory over Edmonds-Woodway last week.

There are not a lot of games this week, so these rankings will stand until Jan. 4. There are some big matchups and tournaments next week, so look for more movement to start 2010.
