Home of Hendrickson will get a makeover

A few years back, Mount Vernon’s gymnasium topped our list of the state’s best high school basketball venues. Conjuring up images of the cracker-box facility in the movie ‘Hoosiers’, the Bulldogs’ home floor is legendary.

It’s produced 28 state berths and a 3-for-6 showing in state championship games. Current major league pitcher Mark Hendrickson appeared in half of them, with back-to-back titles as a junior and senior after finishing second in 1990.

His home floor, however, is getting a major overhaul as we enter a new decade. Here’s a recent story from the Skagit Valley Herald explaining the upcoming changes:http://www.goskagit.com/home/article/historic_mvhs_gym_to_get_facelift/

As for this year’s version of Mount Vernon basketball, the first state berth in three seasons seems imminent. The Bulldogs, who sport impressive wins over Wesco North contenders Snohomish and Cascade,.are off to a 5-1 start with their lone loss coming against 2A runner-up Burlington-Edison.

They host Marysville-Pilchuck tomorrow before opening up Northwest Conference play Monday.
