The West Central District III has finalized plans to play the semifinals and finals of the 4A and 3A boys and girls basketball tournaments at the ShoWare Event Center in Kent.
“This is just great news for the West Central District fans,” said Shelly Thiel, WCD director.
The first and second rounds of the 4A tournaments will still be at various high-school sites, as in the past (higher seeds host the first round), then the 4A boys semis will be at ShoWare on Tuesday, Feb. 23, with the 4A girls playing on Wednesdasy, Feb. 24. The championship games, and two consolation games, are set for Friday, Feb. 26. ShoWare has a hockey event that Saturday.
In 3A, the girls semis will be Tuesday, March 2, followed by the boys semis on Wednesday, March 3. The championship games and two consolation games will be on Friday, March 5.
Other consolation games for both 4A and 3A will be at various high-school sites.
The 4A WCD semifinals and finals were at Puyallup High last year. The move to ShoWare will cost an additional $7,000 to $8,000, Thiel estimates, but he thinks it will be worth it.
Thiel is hoping to find some sponsorship help to offset the additional costs.
ShoWare also is the site of the second annual Les Schwab Kent Shootout on Jan. 29, which features two girls games and two boys games (Kent-Meridian vs. Kentlake and Kentwood vs. Kentridge).
The South Puget Sound League tournament (all 14 boys and girls games) is also moving to the venue for the first time and runs Feb. 11-13.
I admit I haven’t been to an event at ShoWare yet, but I’m looking forward to these.
