Girls basketball rankings — Week 7

Looking for a great girls basketball game to attend this week?

it doesn’t get much better than No. 1 vs. No. 2 in Class 4A, and that’s what we’ll have Thursday as top-rated Auburn Riverside plays at home against No. 2 Federal Way.

I plan to be there.

Auburn Riverside cruised when the two teams first met at Federal Way (the preseason No. 1) back on Dec. 4. Federal Way then lost to Kentwood four days later. But the Eagles are a much better team now that guard Brittany Barrington is back in the lineup after missing the seven games while recovering from the knee surgery she had last spring.

Should be a great game. Then Federal Way plays at No. 8 Kentwood Saturday.

It’s a big week in KingCo 4A, too, as Garfield (preseason No. 5, but currently unranked) faces two key contests against No. 3 Woodinville Wednesday and No. 9 Newport Friday.

Newport lost by 22 points to No. 6 Issaquah Friday and slides down two spots after entering the rankings at No. 7 just last week. Bellarmine Prep and Kentwood each inch up a spot, but those are the only changes in 4A this week.

Edmonds Woodway continues to impress and is knocking hard on the door.

In Class 3A, the top five remain the same, but Lakes dives from No. 6 to No. 10 after losing to Sumner, now in the rankings at No. 9. The Spartans have a big game tomorrow night against No. 6 White River.

Yelm (9-1) leaps into the limelight at No. 8 — the Tornados have beaten Sumner and owe their lone loss to Tumwater way back in early December.

West Valley of Yakima is on the brink of the top-10 again at 7-2 and could make their way in next week. Meadowdale (5-4) slips out for now after losses to Jackson (4A No. 10) and Shorecrest (3A No. 7).

Seems like there are 6 or 7 very good 3A teams, then a bunch of others. What do you think?
