High-school girls basketball rankings — Week 9

There’s so much conjecture when it comes to rankings, so I love it when good teams play each other to decide which one is better (at least on that night).

Some teams proved my rankings wrong last week. Just when I was convinced the Woodinville Falcons might be a true contender for the 4A state title and jumped them to No. 2, Newport comes along and knocks them off.

That’s not to say Woodinville can’t win the state title. But if the Falcons can, so can the Knights. Actually, I think 4A is pretty wide open this year. Auburn Riverside remains unbeaten, and No. 1, but the Ravens haven’t really dominated.

So, you’ll see Newport up to No. 6 (from No. 9) and Woodinville at No. 7. And let’s not forget the other hot KingCo 4A team, Issaquah. The Eagles inch up to No. 4 — and they play Woodinville on Wednesday.

Edmonds-Woodway earns the No. 9 ranking after another win over Jackson (which drops out). That’s still probably not high enough. Lewis and Clark of Spokane lost again last week, this time to Gonzaga Prep, so L-C is down on the “watch” list. The GSL is now represented by Mead at No. 10. The Panthers, who lost three in a row early in the season, are riding a nine-game win streak.

In 3A, Yelm falls out after losing three straight. Lakes and Bonney Lake also lost and slide out of the rankings. So, you’ll find West Valley of Yakima, Port Angeles and Seattle Prep rounding out the top-10. Prep, which dropped its first four games of the season, has won 10 in a row. The Panthers have a big test Wednesday against top-ranked Holy Names.

Auburn Mountainview is playing well now that everyone is healthy. The Lions lost a close one to No. 5 White River on Saturday. This is a big week for them as they take on Bonney Lake and Sumner.

The playoffs are just around the corner, so things are really heating up now. Check these out and let me know what you think:
