White River appeal upheld; Hornets will be 2A

White River’s appeal of its enrollment numbers for the 2010-12 classification cycle was upheld by the WIAA Executive Board yesterday.

The Buckley school will drop to 2A next fall.

Initially, White River was the last school on the 3A list (with one more student that Interlake). But athletic director Chris Gibson said administrators found a discrepancy in the enrollment numbers reported (additional students in the alternative school population were from surrounding districts).

Gibson said White River plans to be part of the new SPSL 2A, if the formation of that league is approved by SPSL principals next week. The league would include the four SPSL teams currently in 3A that are dropping to 2A (Clover Park, Franklin Pierce, Sumner and White River) as well as four current Nisqually League schools (Eatonville, Fife, Steilacoom and Washington).

That leaves SPSL 3A with just six schools — Auburn Mountainview, Bonney Lake, Decatur (dropping from 4A), Enumclaw, Lakes and Peninsula.
