I knew this wasn’t going to be easy.
No matter which current SPSL 4A North Division school gets placed in the South Division next fall, somebody’s going to be unhappy.
As you might recall, the SPSL principals decided last week that either Jefferson or Federal Way would be required to make the move. And since both are in the Federal Way School District, the principals left it up to the two schools (or the district) to choose.
But Jefferson and Federal Way coudln’t decide (neither wants the additional travel expenses). Originally,a source told me that the schools were going to ask the SPSL principals to make the call. But now Federal Way has appealed to the West Central District, even though there has yet to be a decision.
Apparently, they are appealing the fact that the principals decided it should be either Federal Way or Jefferson (rather than Auburn or Auburn Riverside).
The WCD has a committee ready to look into the matter, according to Shelly Thiel, WCD president. But generally appeals are heard first by the league, then the district, he said.
Rick Wells, president of the SPSL athletic directors, said he was ready to flip a coin at today’s ADs meeting to determine whether Jefferson or Federal Way would make the move. But due to Federal Way’s appeal, he held off and plans to wait to see with the WCD does.
The decision could be sent back to the SPSL principals, but they don’t meet until March 1. The ADs aren’t waiting to put together their fall schedules. Right now, they are scheduling SPSL South competition with a Jefferson/Federal Way vs. whoever.
I’ll keep you updated as information becomes available.
