Huerta leads Kentwood girls past Rogers

Kylie Huerta, the smallest player on the court at just 5-foot-1, had a big-time game to lead fourth-ranked Kentwood past Rogers of Puyallup in the opening game of the SPSL 4A girls basketball tournament at the ShoWare Center in Kent, 62-49.

Huerta, a junior just named co-MVP of the SPSL North, piled up 23 points, 8 rebounds, , 5 steals and 4 assists. But this was no one-person show as three other Kentwood players scored in double figures — Liz Mills (15), Sana Milovic (11) and Courtney Johnson.

Rogers led 15-14 after one quarter, but Kentwood opened the second with an 18-2 run and it was never closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

The Rams were led by Nichole Jones, the co-MVP of the SPSL South, who pumped in 21 points. But no other Rogers player had more than nine.

This was a game between the No. 2 teams from each division. Kentwood will play again Saturday against the loser of tonight’s championship game between No. 1 Auburn Riverside and Bethel. Rogers plays Saturday against the winner of tomorrow’s game between No. 2 Federal Way and Puyallup.
