It was an opening half to forget — Auburn Riverside 16, Bethel 12.
Not what you’d expect in the championship game of the SPSL 4A girls basketball tournament. Especially not from Riverside, which is unbeaten, ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 18 in the nation.
But the Ravens finally got their shots to fall in the second half and pulled away for a 59-27 victory Thursday night at the ShoWare Center in Kent.
Kathleen Cooper scored 10 of her 16 points in the second half and Mercedes Wetmore (UW recruit) contributed 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Things don’t get much easier for Bethel, which committed 30 turnovers. The Braves play No. 4 Kentwood Saturday to decide the second- and third-place seeds into next week’s West Central 4A District tournament.
