Josh Smith had a mammoth first half (17 points, 9 rebounds) as Kentwood blew out to a 35-15 lead and went on to a surprisingly easy victory over Decatur, 62-42, in the SPSL 4A boys basketball tournament at the ShoWare Center.
Smith, a 6-foot-9 senior who has signed with UCLA, finished with 21 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks. He would have scored more if he hadn’t struggled at the free-throw line, making just 5 of 11.
Decatur shot just 21.1 percent from the field in the first half, while Kentwood hit at a 51.9 clip.
Tre Tyler helped Kentwood’s cause with 12 points, hitting 4 of 7 three-pointers.
Decatur got 13 points from Jordan McCloud and 10 from Terrell Williams. The Gators were without their No. 2 rebounder, Anthony Williams, who sat for academic reasons.
