High-school girls basketball rankings — Week 12

You’ve gotta love this time of year if you’re a girls basketball fan (which you must be if you’re reading this, right?)

It’s playoff time across the state and I’m very anxious to see how things play out.

As far as this week’s rankings go, there aren’t many changes, because there weren’t many upsets. In 4A, Newport lost a pair of tough ones to Issaquah and Garfield, so the Knights are back on the “watch” list.

I debated long and hard about which team to move into the top-10, and I decided to go with Gonzaga Prep at No. 10, right below Central Valley. Over the years, teams from the GSL come over here and do quite well at state and GP seems to be on a bit of a roll as of late.

Federal Way lost a tiebreaker game to Kentwood and slides from No. 2 to No. 5. The Eagles are doing remarkably well without two key players who may not be back.

Woodinville goes back to No. 2, followed by Kentwood and Edmonds-Woodway.

In 3A, I was very surprised to see Shadle Park lost to East Valley of Spokane. The Highlanders stay in the poll, but fall to No. 7. West Valley of Yakima lost to another 4A team (Walla Walla), and also stays in, but slides to No. 9.

We should know a lot more after this week’s games.
