West Central/SW 3A bi-district basketball brackets

Finally, the first-round pairings for all of the West Central/Southwest 3A bi-district tournaments are set.

The SPSL and Seamount seedings were decided last week, but the qualifiers from the Olympic and Western Cascade leagues (listed on the bracket as OWL) weren’t determined until Monday (girls) and Tuesday (boys).

I’ll post links to both the complete girls and boys brackets below, but want you to see the early pairings. This bi-district has an interesting concept with its bracketing. It’s not a true double-elimination tournament and only half of the teams have the opportunity to actually win the tourney title.

Four of the games are winner-to-state right out of the chute. The other four are loser-out and the teams in that part of the bracket can finish no higher than fourth.

Mind you, 8 of the 16 teams in the tournament get state berths, creating half of the state bracket. That’s because this is such a huge bi-district.

There are some compelling first-round games, with the boys playing Friday and most of the girls playing Saturday (there are two girls games Friday, both part of double-headers with boys games — Mount Rainier vs. No. 10 Capas at Hudson’s Bay and Yelm vs. Renton at Mount Rainier).

On the boys side, No. 6 Capital was upset by Bremerton Tuesday night and opens the tournament against No. 1 Enumclaw. That’s a tough draw for both teams. And Bremerton gets No. 4 Lakes.

On the girls side, No. 2 Kennedy (the defending state champion) faces No. 4 Port Angeles. PA lost to Capital on Monday. Capital opens against No. 7 Bonney Lake. And No. 5 White River faces No. 8 Prairie, which was ranked as high as No. 3 for most of the season. The loser of that game gets the winner between Auburn Mountainview, ranked to start the season, and Timberline.

One of them won’t get to state.

Here are Friday’s first-round boys games:

At Clover Park

Game 1: Lakes (SPSL/Seamount # 3) vs. Bremerton (OWL #1), 8 p.m. (winner to state)

Game 2: Prairie (Southwest #3) vs. Evergreen (S/S # 8), 6 p.m. (loser out)

At Auburn Riverside

Game 3: Union (SW #2) vs. Kennedy (S/S #2), 8 p.m. (winner to state)

Game 4: Port Angeles (OWL #4) vs. Franklin Pierce (S/S #5), 6 p.m. (loser out)

At Hudson’s Bay

Game 5: Foster (S/S #4) vs. Hudson’s Bay (SW #1), 7 p.m. (winner to state)

Game 6: Timberline (OWL #3) vs. Mount Rainier (S/S #6), 8 p.m. (loser out)
