Newport, Issaquah complete 4A state girls basketball field

First think I did this morning was check to see how Newport and Issaquah fared in their loesr-out, winner-to-state games against their Greater St. Helen’s League opponents.

I wasn’t surprised to hear they both won — although I did raise my eyebrows a bit to see Issaquah’s score over top-seeded Evergreen of Vancouver: 57-29. That’s some mighty fine defense. Newport beat Skyview of Vancouver 69-44, another dominant performance.

I had heard the GSH field was a a bit down this season and of course KingCo 4A has been tough all season.

So, Newport and Issaquah join Puyallup and Rogers of Puyallup as the final four qualifiers for this week’s tournament, which starts Wednesday at the Tacoma Dome.

And one other note, No. 8 Mead of Spokane beat No. 4 Chiawana of Pasco for the Eastern Regional title. Both had already qualified for state, and I’m anxious to see them play.

From our final top-10 rankings, all but No. 7 Woodinville made the final cut.

The 4A draws for girls and boys are later this afternoon, so check back here for more coverage.
