Derek Eager signs with UCLA

Derek Eager’s big javelin throws this season are paying big dividends.

The Tahoma senior signed a letter of intent with UCLA Wednesday night, four days after shattering his own state record with a heave of 229 feet, 5 inches at the Pasco Invitational.

Eager also leads the state in the discus (182-9) and is eighth in the shot put (53-5).

According to his parents, he is receiving a full five-year scholarship (he plans to redshirt as a freshman).

“UCLA has everything that Derek was looking for: sunshine, great javelin coach, great school academically, and it’s FREE,” his mother, Sally, said in an e-mail Thursday morning. “A bonus to our family is that they are even on the west coast in the Pac-10 conference so we can see him throw sometimes.”

Derek visited UCLA earlier this month, and at the time they were only offerning a partial scholarship. But they told him it could turn into a full ride if he continued to come up with big marks this season, and he did.

I wrote this story about him after he first broke the state record this season with a throw of 218-7.
