John Barbee, who led the Foster boys basketball team to three state-tournament appearances in his three seasons there, is the new head girls coach at Kennedy Catholic.
“He’s just a great fit,” athletic director Bob Bourgette said. “He’s just what we were looking for. . . . Our pool of candidates was just phenomenal, but he really stood out.”
Barbee took the Foster boys to the Class 2A state tournament in 2006-07 and 2007-08 and earned an eighth-place finish at the 3A tourney in 2008-09. He said he stepped down after that season because his position as a program coordinator in the Tukwila School District was eliminated. He now works with at-risk kids in a program called Youth Care.
Barbee has coached AAU girls basketball the past three seasons and said he is excited to coach again in the Seamount League.
“I feel tlike I’m going back home,” he said.
Barbee succeeds Tom Mummert, who cited parental pressures when he resigned last month after guiding the Lancers to a disappointing seventh-place finish at the 3A tournament. They won the state title in 2009 and were second in ’08. His three-year record was 75-8.
“It’s clear what the expecations are,” Barbee said.
Kennedy will return several key players from this year’s team and has a strong incoming freshman class, according to Barbee.
