Brian Davis to coach Kentwood boys basketball

Brian Davis is the new head boys basketball coach at Kentwood High School.

“I’ve been on cloud nine all day,” said Davis, who was hired this morning.

Davis many Kent ties. He played basketball at Kent-Meridian, graduating in 1998. After a two-year stint in the Navy, he was an assistant coach at Kentridge from 2000-2006. Davis then moved to Bellingham to attend Western Washington University and has been an assistant coach at Squalicum from 2006-10.

The Storm won its second straight Class 2A state championship this past season.

UCLA-bound Joshua Smith led Kentwood to the 4A title. Michael Angelidis stepped down as head coach at the end of the season, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.

“Brian has done a great job here and I anticipate he will do a great job at Kentwood,” Squalicum coach Dave Dickson said. “He’s going from one defending state champion to another defending state champion. It will be a new challenge for him to move over one (coaching) chair. He’s contributed a great deal to the success we’ve had at Squalicum.”

Davis, 29, will be a substitute teacher in the Kent School District this fall.

“He’s very enthusiastic, very passionate and very organized,” Kentwood athletic director Jo Anne Daughtry said. “I just think he’s going to be a good fit for Kentwood.”
