Maddie Meyers of The Northwest School in Seattle has been named Gatorade Girls Track and Field State Athlete of the Year.
The award recognizes outstanding athletic and academic achievement and character. Tahoma’s Derek Eager, a UCLA recruit who won 4A state titles in the discus and javelin, previously was named Gatorade’s boys winner.
Meyers, a 5-foot-8 sophomore, swept the 800 meters, 1,600 and 3,200 at the Class 1A state championships last month.
On June 12, she used a powerful closing kick to win the Jim Ryun Dream Mile in New York in 4 minutes, 41.93 seconds, the nation’s fastest time by a prep girl at the time of her selection, and 17th-fastest time ever by a high-school female.
She is the state record-holder in the outdoor mile, indoor mile and 2,000-meter steeplechase.
