By Doug Drowley

Special to The Times

The first practice for the 2010 high school football season won’t take place until Aug. 18, but Archbishop Murphy coach Dave Ward already has word that his quarterback’s stock is rising.

“I just heard today that the UW is looking at him,” Ward said Aug. 5.

Austin VanderWel enters his senior year at ATM as a three-year starter behind center. He also is a hard-hitting free safety, and Ward said that is where he would fit with the Huskies.

Washington has already Archbishop Murphy, landing a commitment from defensive lineman Taniela Tupou.

VanderWel is one of three returning senior quarterbacks that could make the Class 2A/1A Cascade League fun to watch. King’s QB Thomas Vincent is rated among the Top 50 recruits in Washington by Rivals.com — check the highlight video in an earlier post — and Lakewood QB Justin Lane also is highly touted.

VanderWel he helped Archbishop Murphy to the 2A state semifinals a year ago.
