Mercer Island ‘Light the Courts’ project moving forward

When longtime Mercer Island tennis coach Joyce Hedlund died in November 2009, members of the Islanders tennis team decided to work toward raising money to put lights on the school’s tennis courts.

It was something Hedlund always wanted and the members of team wanted to light the courts in the same way she added light to their lives.

One of the athletes who took on this charge was Gabe Davis, working with good friend Matthew Sedlacek. Davis, a recent graduate is helping to coordinate the collection of donations for a project that will be completely funded by the community.

“Joyce was a remarkable woman and I feel there is no better way to honor her than to put lights on the courts like she always wanted,” Davis said in an e-mail.

The goal is to light the courts by the spring of 2011.

The project is expected to cost a total of $285,000.

For more information on the project, contact Davis on his cell at 206-235-7044 or e-mail him at gdavis12@gmail.com.

Those interested in donating to the project can makes checks payable to the “Joyce Hedlund Memorial Tennis Courts Improvement Project.” Here is the address for donations:
