Perfect seasons aren’t easy to come by in soccer.
By nature of the game itself, even the best teams are likely to drop a contest or two over the course of a long season, particularly those playing in tough leagues or scheduling difficult non-league opponents.
So, it shouldn’t be a terrible shock that many of the state’s top soccer teams lost at least one game last week.
Mildly surprising that so many lost? Sure.
Eight teams in The Seattle Times first Class 3A state rankings lost a game last week, while three 4A teams dropped one.
The events changed the order of the 3A rankings quite a bit, while the changes weren’t so dramatic in 4A.
Skyline, the two-time defending 4A champion, retained its No. 1 status after wins over Liberty, Mercer Island and Bellevue. The Spartans have won all four games this season by shutouts.
Camas, which started No. 1 in 3A, is no longer at the top.
The Papermakers lost to 4A Skyview, 4-3, in an outcome that might be a bit deceiving. Camas led 1-0 at halftime and put in reserves in the second half to gain experience in the non-league game.
Probably a move that will pay off down the road.
Still, with the top two ranked teams – Camas and Mercer Island – losing last week, that left room for Glacier Peak to scoot up from No. 3 and take the No. 1 spot in 3A.
Camas will only drop to No. 2, followed by Kennedy at No. 3, and two teams that surged into the Top 10 this week: No. 4 Shadle Park and No. 5 Seattle Prep.
Shadle Park defeated two sound teams in Pasco and Mount Spokane to improve to 4-0. Seattle Prep did the same, knocking off two toughies in impressive fashion (4-1 win over Mercer Island, and 4-0 victory over Auburn Mountainview.
Mercer Island, a 3A state finalist last season, had a rocky week with two losses but they came at the hands of Skyline and Seattle Prep, so they must be kept in perspective. The Islanders get a chance to redeem themselves some against a solid Juanita team Tuesday.
